Flats, apartments and condominiums residents still confused about segregation of solid waste - SWCorp

Federal Territory Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp) director Hazilah Gumri said residents of flats, apartments and condominiums are still confused about solid waste segregation for recycling.

"Waste segregation for landed and multi-storey premises are the same, namely plastic, paper and others while the other waste is put in garbage bags.

"The difference is that residents in landed premises should put garbage bags containing recycling waste beside the garbage can and the bag containing the other waste in the garbage can.

"Residents of multi-storey premises should put the recycling waste in specific containers provided by the Joint Management Body (JMB) or take them to recycling centres," he said when contacted by Bernama today.

SWCorp officers would examine the garbage bags at multi-storey premises and if found that garbage was not segregated, notice or compound would be issued to JMB.

"The recycling waste management system for multi-storey units is the responsibility of the JMB."

Hazilah said said garbage collection schedule for multi-storey premises and landed premises was the same, twice a week and once a week for recycling waste.

"For multi-storey premises not handled by JMB, the management of garbage is dependent on the housing developers.

"If they (the developers) do not not taken any steps to ensure the residents segregate solid waste, the developers will be fined," he added.

Those who violate the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Act 2007 can be fined up to RM1,000.

Tenants or owners can be fined RM50 for first offence, RM100 for second offence and RM500 for third offence while for multi-storey storey premises the fines are RM100, RM200 and RM500 respectively.
