Flood evacuation centres are better organised - Rohani

Flood relief centres across the country are better managed this time around compared to previous years, said Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim.

"Victims and volunteers are now more organised and we have more volunteers to help the victims at the relief centres," she told reporters after attending the Chinese New Year open house organised by Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) here today.

She said as at noon today there are six states still affected by the floods, but the situation was different now compared to the big flood in 2014.

Four relief centres have also been closed with more than 1,000 victims were allowed to return home even though there are about 11,000 still housed in evacuation centres in six states, she said.

"I understand that all evacuation centres are run smoothly and we are constantly monitoring the situation and I hope the victims who have been allowed to return home will adhere to the instructions when they were asked to move back into relief centres," she said.

According to Rohani, thus far the government had spent more than RM1.3 million to improve the supply chain of providing goods for the evacuees.

She said the modus operandi was to have food depots in unaffected areas to send their supplies to the affected areas.

Each depot has food supply sufficient to cater for 7,000 evacuees for a duration of one week, she said, adding that the disaster kits, each containing drinking water, biscuits, instant noodles and canned food, were also distributed to flood victims. - BERNAMA
