Flood victim worried about losing her children's school books

A 40-year-old housewife, who has been placed at the flood relief centre in SK Sialang said she was worried about her children’s’ textbooks, which are feared to be damaged by the floods.

Juriah Sumarthi, who is one of 105 victims from the Tangkak district said she could not save her children’s' school books as the water level at her home suddenly rose at about 6.30 pm on Saturday.

"I had to leave the house immediately as the water-level kept rising," she told Bernama here Monday.

A total of 126 flood victims have been placed in three flood relief centres in Tangkak and Segamat.

Zainal Ramli, 54, said he too faced a similar plight as he could not save his belongings after the water-level had risen quickly at his home in Kampung Seberang Gajah.

He said the flood problems had begun since the 1980's, due to the poor management of the drainage system which caused water to stagnate and overflow every time it rained heavily.

"I hope the authorities do not overlook this matter and improve the drainage system immediately," he said.

Meanwhile, Kampung Sialang village head Mohd Yusof Ahmad said all the victims from Kampung Seberang Gajah, Kampung Sialang Dalam and Kampung Tanjong Laboh were safe, and thanked all the government agencies involved in providing excellent service to the victims.
