KUCHING: Determined to ensure his 57 chickens would not fall victims to the flood, a resident in Serian, about 65 kilometres from here, worked doggedly through the night to evacuate them to high grounds.
Ismail Tugiman, 38, of Kampung Munggu Limo, said he managed to evacuate his chickens in the nick of time to high grounds nearby when over 50 homes in his village were inundated by flood waters on Wednesday night.
He said although the water rose rapidly at that time, he was still able to move some of his household items on the ground floor of his house to the first floor.
“We only shifted the household items to the upper floor after ensuring the chickens were safe,” said Ismail, when met by Bernama, recently.
As of this evening (Saturday), the water was receding slowly with some houses in Kampung Munggu Limo still submerged.
Several families from the village were also evacuated to the Kampung Ranchang Multi-Purpose Hall, nearby.
The floods also affected neighbouring Kampung Hulu Serian, forcing the evacuation of 80 residents from 29 families in the village to the Serian Community Hall.
