The Dewan Rakyat was informed today that foreign workers intake into the country was still under control with the Labour Department's consistent monitoring and checks to determine the genuine need for
these workers.
As at Sept 30, the ministry had approved 6,876 out of 10,353 applications by employers involving the intake of 203,625 foreign workers, said Human Resource Deputy Minister Datuk Maznah Mazlan.
"The Labour Department will only open up applications and offers to foreign workers after it is satisfied that the set process and procedures have been adhered to and there's no applications from local workers," she said in response to a supplementary question by Datuk Tajuddin Abdul Rahman (BN-Pasir Salak).
Tajuddin had initially asked the ministry to clarify if locals faced unemployment due to the presence of foreign workers in the country.
That scenario was inaccurate because foreign workers were recruited according to the terms and conditions set by the Cabinet Committee of Foreign Workers, explained Maznah.
She elaborated that a one stop centre had been set up in collaboration with government agencies and recruitment portals as well as job carnivals organised nationwide.
"This year alone, 167,344 locals, including 40,000 graduates, managed to secure hobs nationwide as a result of the one stop centre and job carnivals," she said.
"We invited employers to conduct walk-in interviews and provided information on suitable job matches," she added.
