Former Gelang Patah MP Tan Ah Eng died today in Kota Tinggi, losing her year-long battle with brain cancer, according to her personal assistant Goh Teck Guan. Ah Eng was 58.
Ah Eng was rushed by her husband, Tan Hee Miang, and their daughter, Pei Tze, to the Kota Tinggi Hospital after she experienced difficulty breathing and died upon arriving at the hospital at 11 am, Goh said.
Besides husband Hee Miang and daughter Pei Tze, 33, Ah Eng leaves behind a son, Nian You, 28, who is an engineer in England.
Goh said Ah Eng was diagnosed with brain cancer in July last year and her health began to deteriorate early this year.
Despite her illness, Ah Eng continued to help her constituents though she was forced to write to various agencies, government departments and others from her bed.
Ah Eng, who was Wanita MCA deputy chief and Johor Wanita MCA head, helped to campaign for the Barisan Nasional in the last general election.
In a video recording, she appealed to the constituents of Gelang Patah to vote for former Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman in the contest for the seat against DAP advisor Lim Kit Siang.
Lim captured the seat.
Ah Eng had served the constituents of Gelang Patah as their MP for two terms.
