Former sales exec gets 12 years, two months' jail, 94 lashes for CBT

A former sales executive at an electrical appliances company was sentenced to 12 years and two months' jail and 94 strokes of the rotan by the Sessions Court here Tuesday for committing criminal breach of trust (CBT).

Judge G.Ramesh passed down the sentence to Brian Tiong Meng Hong, 35, after finding him guilty to 47 counts of CBT involving electrical appliances, including refrigerators, television sets, washing machines, rice cookers and ovens, worth over RM800,000 three years ago.

He committed the offences at the Panasonic Malaysia Sdn Bhd's warehouse at Lot 2-53 & 2-55, Lion Industrial Park, Jalan SU 8, Phase 2, Seksyen 22 Off Persiaran Tengku Ampuan here between September 2012 and February 2013.

He was charged under Section 408 of the Penal Code that provides a maximum jail term of 14 years and with whipping, and also liable to fine.

However, the court allowed Tiong's application for a stay of execution of the sentence pending appeal, and set the bail of RM30,000 with one surety.

Tiong, who is now a fishmonger, was also ordered to report to the nearest police station every month.

He was represented by lawyer Esther Jayaraja.

At the same court, former finance manager of a private company was sentenced to 11 years' jail after he was found guilty to 11 counts of CBT and eight counts of misappropriation of company's fund totalling over RM1 million six years ago.'

Judge Ramesh, however, allowed 51-year-old Hazni Md Turee's application for a stay of execution of the sentence pending appeal, and set the bail at RM55,000 with one surety.

Hazni was represented by lawyer Tina Ong.

Deputy public prosecutor Mohd Raimi Mohd Ramli appeared for the prosecution in both cases.
