Friday Fives: Five Things to See at the Porsche Museum

Yes, this place holds the most comprehensive collection of Porsche-made cars. Some were created during the modern era, some before World War II and some even before the name ‘Porsche’ appeared on cars — all of them broke ground in their own right. It is an exhibition of more than 80 vehicles with other bits, pieces and paraphernalia. There are many things to see and do, and we recommend you allocate at least half a day to fully immerse yourself in the part, present and future of Porsche. And to start you off, here are five cars that you shouldn’t miss.

Porsche Typ 64 Some might think it is the Beetle but for many, the Typ 64 the genesis of shape of all Porsche vehicles to come. The car was created for racing and only three were made. Of the three, one was destroyed during the war and the ‘car’ you see here is one of two that survived.

Porsche 909 ‘Bergspyder’ Insane might the word used to described this racer. It was made for one thing — hill-climb racing, so it needed to be light and powerful. So the 909 has a plastic outer shell, an aluminium frame and beryllium brake discs for a total weight of 384kg. The 909 draws power from a 2.0-litre flat-8 that produces 275PS (271bhp). It is said to go from 0-60mph in under 2 seconds. Yes, fast.

Porsche 917/20 There’s a story behind the pink. Based on how the car looks, which meshes the short-tail version and long-tail version, Porsche said to have called the car a fat pig. Hence, the paint job of the racer became pink and the words you see are parts of the pig. Although the car didn’t win the race, the 917/20 was popular enough to become one of Porsche’s most iconic cars.

Porsche 911 ‘Sally Carrera’ This one needs no introduction, all fans of cars and Pixar's Cars would know who she is. This is Sally Carrera and she is based on a Porsche 911 996 with modifications done to make it look like her, including having a taller roof, a bigger windscreen, a front bumper with succulent lips and her tattoo at the back. Oh yes, you can start her up and drive her. If you can get to her keys… we don't know where they are kept.

Porsche Studie C88 We know what’s the first thing that came your mind, “What the F***! Is this really a Porsche?” Yes, dear friend… yes it is. The C88 was designed specifically for the Chinese market; that the number 88 is there is no coincidence. The car has one child-seat, in compliance to China’s one-child policy of the time. It’s powered by a 2.0-litre flat-4 delivering up to 67bhp. Did it take off? No, the Chinese government thanked Porsche for their efforts and adapted the idea for free. CHRIS NG
