The issue of Friday prayers which an activist has suggested should be conducted on Saturday to allow Muslims to perform it during the weekends, is against Islamic law.

Freelance speaker, Ustaz Wan Akashah Wan Abdul Hamid said the proposal which had gone viral and strongly opposed on the social media, must be rejected as it did not refer to the Quran.

He told Bernama, when contacted, that verse 9 of the Al-Jumu'ah chapter in the Quran clearly stated that Friday prayers must be performed on Friday.

Wan Akashah was commenting on a statement by an activist who suggested that Friday prayers be conducted on Saturday so that Muslims could feel calmer performing the prayers on a public holiday.

He urged Muslims to be careful so as not to be influenced by such a view.

Meanwhile, Penang Mufti Datuk Wan Salim Wan Mohd Noor said the issue should not arise as the ruling was already enshrined in Islam.

A non-governmental organisation, Kelab Suara Anak Muda 1Malaysia (SAM1M), today urged police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission to investigate the matter which it said insulted Islam. -- Bernama
