Held from November 4 to November 7, Malaysia Fashion Week (MFW) brought together local and international fashion exhibitors and designers at FACIT @INTRADE, a fashion and lifestyle trade exhibition, for a fashion showcase like no other. Besides that, MFW attracted an audience of fashionistas from across the globe, members of the media, tastemakers, buyers and a number of prominent celebrities.

Among the highlights at MFW was the finale Galaxy Runway show inspired by Star Wars, one of the biggest movie franchises in history, staged on November 7. The sci-fi fashion extravaganza kicked off with unforgettably show-stopping runway looks that wowed show-goers right from the start. Featuring four local designers specifically Lynda Rahim, Azura Mazaruddin, Nawre and Bremen Wong, with statement-making footwear designed exclusively by Datuk Professor Jimmy Choo, the Galaxy Runway transported attendees to an otherworldly fashion universe, far far away! The Galaxy Runway was curated by InTrend Malaysia, a Malay-language fashion and beauty title under Astro Digital Publications.

The ready-to-wear collection designed by LYNDARAHIM, the eponymous label by designer Lynda Rahim, who usually focuses on bridal wear rolled out a 10-piece collection inspired by Stormtroopers. The all-white armoured elite soldiers of the Galactic Empire from the Star Wars universe are the references for the looks boasting forms and cuts that were both street-ready yet evoking a fierce modern vibe.

Taking inspiration from the Jedi was NAWRE’s collection, designed by fashion lecturer and designer Nik Erwan. His designs echoed the garments of the altruistic Jedi Order, who studies, serves and uses the mystical energies of the Force; typically, the light side of the Force. The collection highlighted the importance of ease and luxury, mixed with monastic sartorial elements in heavy, flowing drapes and kimono cuts.

The sophisticated dark side of the Star Wars saga was presented by Azura Couture, a fashion brand owned by female designer Norazura Mazaruddin. The collection welcomes you to the “Dark Side” of Azura Couture, inspired by the Sith Lords, who draw upon the dark side of the Force to gain power in Star Wars. Azura moved far away from her normal inclinations of evening gowns and romantic silhouettes. and created looks that were fashionable, feminine and yet menacing with strong, aggressive silhouettes in the line-up of metallic dresses, wafting robes and capes.

Lastly, Bremen Wong’s superb collection took inspiration from Padmé Amidala’s headdresses. Bremen specialises in fashioning handmade sculptural headgear and accessories, each one a work of art, so this collection was no exception.

All the talented designers were chosen based on their fashion-forward and versatile portfolios, in line with Matrade’s Youth Engagement programme to distinguish the fashion expressions of emerging talents.

We definitely let our geek flag fly during that otherworldly day celebrating creativity, film and fashion!
