KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) is satisfied with the safety and functionality of the centres designated for the nomination of candidates for the 15th General Election (GE15) in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor and Melaka.
Kuala Lumpur JBPM director Nordin Pauzi said the department was involved in the selection of nomination centres with the GE15 committee led by the Election Commission (EC), adding that all the venues in the capital are in a good and safe condition.
He said the committee has looked at various aspects of the venue selection such as the premises' safety and facilities for supporters, among other things, adding that the centres have been cleared of any risk, especially fire hazards.
"The frequent flash flood incidents in the capital were also given attention and the nomination centres are safe," he told Bernama today.
Selangor JBPM director Norazam Khamis said they have conducted checks on the 22 nomination centres in the state and all of them complied with the stipulated safety standards.
He said the department also implemented freeze leave to ensure the highest level of preparedness among its personnel.
"Firemen are on standby at the stations, not at the locations (nomination centres) to avoid suspicions," he said, adding that JBPM would postpone other activities until the nomination process is completed.
Melaka JBPM director Abu Bakar Katain said they have inspected the nomination centres for the Masjid Tanah, Alor Gajah, Tangga Batu, Hang Tuah Jaya, Kota Melaka and Jasin parliamentary constituencies, adding that he was satisfied with the results.
"Several things also need to be improved, especially fire-fighting equipment, access and directions to the gathering site in case of an emergency. Everything is in the best of condition and we hope things go smoothly tomorrow," he said.
