ALOR GAJAH: Barisan Nasional's (BN) bet on UMNO Information Chief Shahril Sufian Hamdan in Alor Gajah failed when he lost in his first attempt for a parliamentary seat in the 15th General Election (GE15).
Shahril garnered 27,288 votes compared to Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidate Adly Zahari who polled 28,178 votes for a wafer-thin majority of 890 votes.
Perikatan Nasional (PN) candidate, who is also former Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Special Duties), Datuk Seri Mohd Redzuan Yusof, obtained 17,211 votes while the Parti Pejuang candidate, Muhammad Nazriq Abdul Rahman, lost his deposit when he only got 323 votes.
In the last GE14, Mohd Redzuan or affectionately known as 'Pak Wan' who at that time contested on the PKR ticket won in a three-cornered competition against two candidates from BN and Pas with a majority of 6,980.
Meanwhile, Mas Ermieyati Samsudin who is the PN candidate for Masjid Tanah sprang a surprise when she managed to retain the seat she won on the BN ticket in GE14.
Mas Ermieyati obtained a majority of 4,411 votes defeating the BN candidate who is also the Masjid Tanah UMNO Youth Chief, Abdul Hakim Abdul Wahid, who polled 21,193 votes.
For the record, Mas Ermieyati who is also Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Parliament and Law) won the seat on a BN ticket in GE14 before joining Bersatu on 13 December 2018.
