Amid talks that their marriage is on the rocks, Parti Keadilan Rakyat vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar and husband Raja Ahmad Shahrir Raja Salim in a statement said they are working on their marriage.
The couple have also called on all to give them privacy.
In a brief, four-paragraph statement, the joint statement from the couple thanked their supporters for understanding and appealed for privacy.
“We are deeply saddened by the undignified intrusion into our private lives and will do our utmost to work out our continuing union,” the statement read.
“Our family is our priority, as is our time together,” the couple added.
The Lembah Pantai member of Parliament is said to have sought a divorce under the fasakh (annulment) principle in late December through a petition at the Jalan Duta Syariah Court.
The Star Online reported that her husband Raja Ahmad Shahrir Iskandar Raja Salim, 35, has reportedly received the petition on Jan 16 and has sought a two-week postponement on the matter for him to prepare his case.
Meanwhile according to The Malay Mail Online, Nurul Izzah had denied that she was seeking to annul her marriage.
She had also replied that she was not seeking a divorce under the fasakh principle to a question from a follower on Twitter.
Raja Ahmad had wed the daughter of Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on May 9, 2003 and the couple have a son and daughter together.
