The government has announced a RM5 million allocation for the repair and cleaning works in areas affected by the floods, especially in the East coast.
According to Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan, these funds will help ease the burden of the local councils in repairing public amenities.
“Among the repair works that will be undertaken include repairing roads that were damaged, the drainage system as well as public buildings that were damaged, including halls and so on,” he said in a statement today.
He said that the allocation will be channelled through the local councils of each district.
“Our ministry will work closely with all local councils to begin cleaning works immediately,” he said during a visit to several affected areas in Kuantan last night to assess the extent of damage to public property as well as dispensing aid to individuals.
Abdul Rahman said that so far, some 350 tonnes of waste is being processed each day, and it is expected to rise to 500 tonnes per day when flood victims return to their homes.
He added, some 2,324 fire and rescue department personnel have been dispatched to help flood victims since the disaster began last week.
