The National Alumni of the Federation of Peninsula Malay Students (GPMS) backs the proposal of North Petaling Jaya Umno Division deputy chief Mohamed Azli Mohemed Saad to discuss the issue of Chinese National Type Schools (SJKC) at the party general assembly next month.
GPMS president Syed Anuar Syed Mohamad said GPMS proposed the item be among the important agenda to be discussed at the assembly.
"We wonder why MCA is worried at the proposal the issue be debated to the extent of urging the police to investigate on the excuse racial tension will take place other than saying it is against the national constitution.
"In this regard, the alumni of the national GPMS urge the MCA Religious Harmony Bureau chairman, Datuk Ti Lian Ker to scrutinise the details in the Federal Constitution which he claimed to have been contravened in the matter," he said in a statement on Wednesday.
Syed Anuar, who is also Gagasan Pendidikan Melayu Malaysia (Gagasan) secretary-general, said the proposal on abolishing vernacular schools should not be seen as denying the right of a community to teach and learn its mother tongue but rather more towards the use of the national language and bridging the gap between the communities, which was widening.
