BACHOK: After going against all odds, a Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) graduate has succeeded in becoming the first whiteleg shrimp breeder in Kelantan using the biofloc technique.
It is a worthwile effort for Muhammad Naim Saa'ri, 32, as he is now able to earn an income of up to five figures monthly.
Muhammad Naim said he decided to use the biofloc technique which was quite popular among farmers in the neighbouring country because it was not only environmentally friendly system, but can also save time compared to conventional farming.
"Having a breeding area that is located about 15 metres away from the Pantai Pulau Kambing coastline has also given me an advantage as I can directly pump seawater into each breeding tank.
"With a capital of RM2,000, I started the shrimp farming business in June this year by having around 50,000 shrimp fry and five tanks," he said when met by reporters at Kampung Tok Kederat, here, today.
Muhammad Naim said, however, his first attempt was not a success after only about 37,500 shrimps survived.
He said, that did not dampen his spirit a tad bit and he remained determined to do better.
"From there, I started to learn various farming techniques including the Bioflac method through YouTube as well as seek advice from experienced farmers and the Fisheries Department.
"Alhamdulillah, up until now, I have around 23 breeding tanks which are able to produce 150,000 whiteleg shrimps per production cycle. I also plan to add another 150,000 shrimp fry soon," said Muhammad Naim who is assisted by two workers.
Muhammad Naim said, whiteleg shrimps were highly sought-after fishing bait as they have higher survival rates.
"It is sold at a price of RM45 to RM60 per kilogramme, depending on the size. There are also a demand from customers outside Kelantan," he said.
