International Law Book Services has urged the government to give Goods and Services Tax (GST) exemption to all kinds of books in an effort to create a knowledgeable and informative society.
Its chairman and group managing director, Datuk Syed Mohd Ebrahim Esmail said this is to avoid confusion as books slapped with GST such as fiction and for general reading are also used as reference and text books by schools and universities.
The suggestion followed the government's decision yesterday to allow zero per cent GST for studenttext books , reference books, work books , religious books and encyclopedias.
Syed Mohd Ebrahim said as such, law books should also be exempted from GST.
"Since it is difficult to determine the specific category of books and to address public confusion, it is practical for the government to exempt all types of books from GST," he said in a statement today.
The publisher said GST exemption for books is important to support the reading campaign and in line with government policies that prioritise education.
