Revenue collected from the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) will not be abused, says Domestic Trade, Cooperative and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Hasan Malek.
He said the money would be used to construct roads, mosques, temples, schools, human capital development, education and infrastructure repairs.
"After 11 days of GST implementation, the people are found accepting the tax system but were confused by certain quarters, especially the opposition out to garner voter support.
"The policy of the opposition is to run down whatever the government is doing," he told reporters after a dialogue session with Consumer Club members and non-governmental organisations here Saturday.
On Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's view that it was not the right time to implement GST, Hasan said the former prime minister was entitled to his opinion.
"Tun Dr Mahathir may be wise on foreign affairs but he needs to know that 170 countries have implemented GST," he said, reminding traders not to cheat the people to profit from GST.
Hasan wanted consumers who were overcharged by traders to bring their cases to the Consumer Claims Tribunal, apart from lodging complaints with the ministry for investigation.
Also present at the event was Perlis Domestic Trade, Cooperative and Consumerism Committee chairman, Datuk Sabry Ahmad.
