Ten years ago, on February 4th 2004, thefacebook.com was born. Today, having hit the one decade mark on Monday, Facebook has approximately 1.2 billion users around the world.
Here are three things you need to know about Facebook’s 10th anniversary:
1. The Boss’ Facebook Birthday Post
Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Mark Zuckerberg posted a really nostalgic note on his wall, reminiscing the day he created the world’s biggest social networking site.
Little did he know that a night in with a few friends and one really brilliant idea, will lead him to become one of the world’s most influential people of the century.
“People often ask if I always knew that Facebook would become what it is today. No way.
I remember getting pizza with my friends one night in college shortly after opening Facebook. I told them I was excited to help connect our school community, but one day someone needed to connect the whole world.”
Mark was also quoted saying that when he reflected upon the past 10 years, he wondered why they were the ones to build [Facebook – as a mega social network site].
“We were just students. We had way fewer resources than big companies. If they had focused on this problem, they could have done it.”
The only answer I can think of is: we just cared more.”
He ended the note with a thank you to those who allowed him to be a part of this journey. Well, thank YOU, Mark.
2. “Look Back” at your Facebook Life
Facebook was so kind on its birthday to launch a video for its “hundreds of millions” of its users as a gift. If you have ever wondered how your Facebook life has been since the day you logged in to the site for the first time, you should check out your personalized video (with an instrumental background music included!)
With the help of an automatic tool, Facebook picks some of your most liked photos and posts on your profile and compiled it into a heart-warming little video titled “A Little Look Back”.
Only you will be able to view the video, unless you share it on your page.
"It's been amazing to see how all of you have used our tools to build a real community. You've shared the happy moments and the painful ones," Zuckerberg said.
According to CNN, a small team at Facebook spent the last few months crafting the videos and ensuring the company had the resources to render them for most of the network's 1.2 billion users.
3. The Paper App
Together with the CEO’s note and personalized video, Facebook also launched a new app called “Paper”.
Paper is said to be the future of Facebook, where it functions as a mobile newsreader. Not only it compiles the latest updates and posts from your Friends, but it also looks more slick and practical for your mobile devices.
For now, this app is only available for iPhone users.
