DR SUBRAMANIAM: Hopefully, the commission will be able to identify the cause of the fire and come up with recommendations to ensure the incident won't repeat.
An emergency motion on the Sultanah Aminah Hospital (HSA) fire tragedy was tabled in Parliament today.
Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam proposed to set up an independent investigation commission to probe yesterday's incident which had claimed six lives.
"Hopefully, the commission will be able to identify the cause of the fire and come up with recommendations to ensure the incident won't repeat," he said.
The fire, believed to have started in one of the Intensive Care Unit's (ICU) treatment room, caused the death of six patients. One patient managed to be rescued and had been admitted to the Sultan Ismail Hospital (HSI) ICU ward.
The patient, who suffered from heart ailments, was however said to be in a stable condition.
Dr Subramaniam also praised three HSA staff – two nurses and a physiotherapy student – for their courage in saving the patients while being confronted with a dangerous situation.
"They fainted from inhaling thick smoke while trying to save and relocate the patients to a safe area. All three were rescued and given respiratory aid.
"Their act in saving the patients, even when faced with such a risky situation, was truly selfless and highly appreciated. Their sense of responsibility is something to be really proud of," Dr Subramaniam said.
The three, however, sustained lung injuries and are now receiving treatment at the HSI ICU ward.
Dr Subramaniam also extended his heartfelt condolences to the victims' families.
"My prayers and thoughts are with them. I hope they will find strength to overcome this time of difficulty."
