Heart surgeon pleads not guilty to hurting wife

A cardiologist at a government hospital here pleaded not guilty in the Magistrate's Court here today to a charge of voluntarily causing hurt on his wife.

Raja Amin Raja Mokhtar, 53, is charged with committing the offence on Karina Idris Ahmad Shah, 46, at an address in Persiaran Ara Bangsar here at 1.30am last March 9.

The offence, under Section 323 of the Penal Code, carries a maximum imprisonment for a year or fine of up to RM2,000 or both, if found guilty.

Deputy public prosecutor K. Vasugi, who prosecuted, offered bail at RM10,000.

However, lawyer Adi Zulkarnain Zulkafli, representing Raja Amin requested for a lower bail on grounds that his client had five children and was suffering from diabetes and high blood pressure.

Magistrate Mohd Rehan Mohd Aris set bail at RM3,000 with one surety and fixed July 8 for mention.
