Twenty-three concessionaires have agreed to offer toll rebates and discounts during Chinese New Year involving an estimated implicated cost of RM2.9 million, Works Minister Datuk Fadillah Yusof announced Tuesday.
He said the move was expected to benefit about 3.62 million highway users and the cost would be borne by the companies concerned as part of their corporate social responsibility.
"Eighteen companies are providing discounts from five to 37.5 percent for Class One vehicles between Jan 30 and Feb 2.
"Whereas, five highways under Projek Lebuhraya Usahasama Bhd (Plus) will offer 20 percent toll rebates to users of Class One vehicles who make electronic payments from Jan 29 and Feb 4," he said in a statement Tuesday.
Fadillah also said the government had not issued any instruction to the concessionaires regarding changes in toll rates.
"In fact the Special Cabinet Committee chaired by the Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin is studying the overall implications of the rising cost of living, including the toll issue," he said.
