Hit over a thousand times, son claimed

Giving his statement to an investigating officer, Ammar, 12, said he was also told to stand in a corner of the house for the whole day until his father returned home, as a punishment.

The statement was presented in a video by prosecutor Anna Arnell to a courtroom before Judge Mattias Moller at the second day of the trial, Wednesday.

Wearing jeans and a green sweater, Ammar also recalled two incidents where he was allegedly beaten by his parents.

The first incident was when he was listening to loud music while doing homework and his mother hit him with a hanger to punish him.

The second incident was when he and his sister had an argument in the car while their father was driving them to school. He said he was hit in the shoulder by his father Azizul Raheem Awaluddin after hitting his sister.

Earlier in another video, the couple’s youngest son, Arif were shown several objects taken from their home and asked to identify which were the ones used to hit him.

The seven-year-old then identified two rotan and a carpet cleaner as objects used by his mother, Shalwati Norshal to hit him.

He described the rotan as a 'stick with a knot'.

Clad in a gold-coloured baju kurung, grey tudung and a suit jacket, Shalwati looked calm throughout the proceeding in the morning. She and her husband Azizul sat with their lawyers Johan Tamm and Kristofer Stahre.

Both of them did not display any emotion throughout the proceeding.

Also present were Malaysia Ambassador Datuk Badruddin Abdul Rahman, Tourism Malaysia director-general Datuk Mirza Mohammed Tayib and several of the couple's family members and friends.

Azizul and Shalwati have been detained since Dec 2013 for allegedly abusing their four children, who are now under the care of their aunt in Kelantan.

They were brought home from Sweden by Deputy Foreign Minister Datuk Hamzah Zainuddin, last month.

The elder children, Aishah, 14, and Ammar are now schooling at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Padang Kala while Adam, 11, and Arif are now studing at Sekolah Kebangsaan Padang Kala, Kota Bharu.
