Hotels should fine those who waste food during Ramadan - PPIM
The wasting of food during Ramadan should be taken seriously as it defeats the purpose of fasting in the first place, PPIM says.
The Malaysian Muslim Consumers Association (PPIM) has urged hotels offering buffet for breaking fasting to impose a fine on people who waste food during Ramadan.
Its chief activist, Datuk Nadzim Johan said the wasting of food during Ramadan should be taken seriously as it defeated the purpose of fasting in the first place.
"In addition to the fine, the hotels can also distribute untouched food to students, the homeless, welfare homes or to mosques," he told a press conference on the 'Avoid Wastage of Ramadan Buffet' campaign, here Monday.
Johan said the hotels could also provide other alternatives such as packaging so that the customers could take the leftover food home.
"As a measure to control and reduce wastage, I suggest that the government establish guidelines and policies relating to food wastage and form a committee to handle it."
