'I will resign from Cabinet if hudud is implemented' - MIC president

After the MCA and Gerakan, now the MIC president, Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam has announced that he would relinquish his ministerial post if the MIC fails to prevent the implementation of hudud in the country.

"The MIC opposed the hudud even from before. I will fight all out to prevent the law from being implemented but if I fail, I will relinquish my ministerial post," he said before 1,500 MIC delegates at the MIC Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) held here, today.

The announcement by Dr Subramaniam, who is also the Health Minister, was made following the move by PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang to table the private member's bill, namely the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) (Amendment) Bill 2016 in Parliament last Thursday.

Dr Subramaniam, however, said he was happy with the statement by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak that the Bill was not hudud as perceived by some Malaysians.

The Health Minister said that the matter would be raised in the Cabinet Meeting to get a clarification from Najib.

Yesterday, MCA president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai and Gerakan president Datuk Mah Siew Keong had announced that they would resign their Cabinet post if the Bill was passed.
