Illegal water connection, Syabas loses RM156,000

A guest house near Taman Dato Senu, Sentul here was raided by Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor (Syabas) on suspicion of making illegal connection to steal water, resulting in losses of almost RM156,000.

Syabas Corporate Communications and Public Affairs assistant general manager, Priscilla Alfred Dharan, said investigation revealed that the premise did not have a valid water meter.

The amount of water used by the premise from the illegal connection is approximately 68,300 cubic meters, she told reporters here Thursday.

She said the raid was jointly conducted by Syabas and the National Water Services Commission (SPAN) at about 12.30pm yesterday, following a report lodged by a member of the public.

In a related development, she said Syabas received 1,271 complaints on water theft between Jan 1 and May 9 this year.

Ninety-six of the cases were classified confirmed with losses amounting RM5 million, she added.
