Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman hopes that all state assemblymen would take initiatives to improve the command of English among primary school children in their respective constituencies

He said this was important to ensure the students would perform better in their Primary School Assessment Test (UPSR) this year, after the state recorded below-par performance in 2016.

"The UPSR format changed last year and it was quite difficult for teachers and students...indirectly causing a deterioration in UPSR results for the English and Science subjects.

"As the Seberang Takir assemblyman, I took the initiative to allocate RM10,000 this year to help schools in the constituency, and I hope it helps them to improve English more effectively.

"Maybe other assemblymen can take similar initiatives, or whatever is good for improving the performance of English in primary schools in their respective constituencies...they could maybe buy English newspapers as well to help the students," he said.

He was speaking to reporters after a visit to SK Seberang Takir here today, which was also attended by State Education Department director Shafruddin Ali Hussin.

Elaborating further, he said two schools in the constituency, namely SK Seberang Takir and SK Teluk Ketapang, were picked to implement a bilingual system by the Ministry of Education.

"For a start, one class in each school will use English for Mathematics and Science...we thank the ministry for carrying out various programmes from time to time to help students master the English language," he said.

Meanwhile, Ahmad Razif, when met after celebrating the first day of Visit Beautiful Terengganu at the Sultan Mahmud Airport here said the state government would examine the issues that resulted in several regions in the state to experience flash floods due to non-stop rain for the past two days.

He said due to the floods, 25 schools, including 22 in Hulu Terengganu could not start school today because the routes to the schools were flooded, and there were schools that were being used as relief centers.

"The floods which occurred in this state have been found to be due to the continuous rainfall, not because of rising river levels, and it was beyond our expectations.

"We will study the solution to this problem, as it was found that due to the flash floods, areas that had never flooded before, experienced floods," he said. - BERNAMA
