A low-cost carrier from india, IndiGo, made an emergency landing at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) this morning after one of its pilots claimed there was a chemical leak in the plane's cargo.
The Airbus A300-200 that was flying from Singapore to Madras, India landed at KLIA at 7.35am.
Senior Fire Superintendent II and Selangor South Zone Fire Department Chief, Azmi Sadon said there were 145 passengers including 6 crew members on board at the time.
“We received an emergency call at 7.50am and we arrived 15 minutes later with two officers and 9 personnel. There were also 9 Hazmat (hazourdous materials and items) members on location,” said Azmi.
Checks done by Malaysian Airport Holdings Bhd (MAHB) crew members on the passenger’s bags did not find any trace of chemicals.
However, a member of Hazmat found a small package in the airplane’s toilet.
Further investigations revealed it was not the source of the alleged chemical leak but it contained 3 metal bars.
“The metal bars have been handed over to the police and we are still investigating if those bars are gold bars or not,” said Sepang Deputy Police Chief, Zaldino Zaludin.
Sources said authorities will continue with their investigations to determine why the metals bars were left in the toilet and determine whether it was an attempt to smuggle them to India.
