The police will look into a report claiming that an inmate of the Pengkalan Chepa Prison here was beaten until he was hospitalised.
Kota Bharu Police Chief ACP Baharom Abu said, the police would record a statement from the victim to facilitate the investigation under Section 326 of the Penal Code for causing serious injuries.
He said this when contacted by Bernama.
The report was lodged by the victim's sister, at 3pm Wednesday at the Kota Bharu police station.
She told Bernama that her brother was admitted to the Raja Perempuan Zainab II Hospital last Monday, after he was said to be having pain in his stomach.
"I rushed to the hospital and was informed by the hospital that he was sent to the operation room after his intestines ruptured... he was still unconscious after he came out from the operation room at 6.40am on Tuesday," she said.
She said her 29-year-old brother was put in the prison since July for a drug-related offence, adding that, she had already been informed before this by her brother on the pain that he had been having after he was beaten.
Meanwhile, the director of the Pengkalan Chepa Prison, Senior Assistant Commissioner of Prisons Kamarul Alam Taib when met said the victim was a remand prisoner.
He said the Prisons Department would work with the police on the matter and would investigate whatever reports received.
