Insulting Perak Sultan: Youth remanded

Perak Police have detained a teenager who made a statement which insulted the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah on the social media recently.
Perak Police Chief Datuk Hasnan Hassan said the 19-year-old teenager was a Form Six student of Sekolah Menengah Sultan Alauddin Riayat Shah 1, Pagoh, Muar, Johor who was due to sit for his Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) examination in early November.
"The suspect was remanded three days in the presence of a Magistrate to help in the investigations," he said in a statement here today.
He added that the arrest was made after police received six reports on Saturday, Oct 14, about the case of insulting Sultan Nazrin which went viral on the social media.
He said police viewed the matter seriously and had opened an investigation paper under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
"According to the reports, the Twitter account of a Malay man had a comment which contained words which insulted the Sultan of Perak.
"Early investigations found that the insulting words were the result of a brawl between the supporters of two football teams, Perak Power and My Football Liga, which led to the suspect using words which insulted the Sultan of Perak," said Hasnan.
Police hoped that with the arrest of the suspect, the public would not easily use the social media to voice their feelings and insults, and humiliating others.
