SHAH ALAM: The country's fashion industry is expected to be able to make a significant contribution to the Malaysian economy in the long run with the emergence of talented young fashion designers from higher education institutions (IPTs).

Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad said IPTs were among the key industry players that have produced many competitive designers in the national and international fashion industry.

She said the sector also played a significant role to the development of the creative industry in Malaysia which contributed 1.9 per cent to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2015.

"This industry has also employed around one million people and has great potential to grow and make a significant contribution to the Malaysian economy in the long run," she told reporters after attending the MSU International Fashion Collection 2021 fashion show, here today.

The event was organised by the Management and Science University, in collaboration with the university's international partner from Japan.

Noraini said IPTs are always welcomed to organise such programmes which can directly provide more space and opportunities for students to showcase their talent and creativity globally.
