The leader of the Red Shirts movement Datuk Seri Jamal Md Yunos sprang a bittersweet surprise today when he appeared wearing towels in front of the Selangor State Secretariat (SUK) building in Shah Alam this morning.
Holding a red water scoop containing shower gel and a toothbrush, his gesture was believed to be a retaliation towards the ‘dry spell’ in several parts of Selangor, recently.
“There is no water at my house for the last four days and I haven’t showered for two days. I want to bathe at the Selangor Menteri Besar office,” said Jamal to the security personnel when he was asked why he was present at the Selangor government premises today.
Jamal arrived at the SUK main entrance at 9.40am and was denied access into the premises.
“I just want to see if the MB office has water supply or not, so open the gate, I want to bathe. It is not as if I’m going to stage a Red Shirts demonstration.
“If there is still no water supply at my house tomorrow, I will return. I will pay 20 sen to bathe. Why scared to open the gate? I’m not carrying any arms or bomb. I won’t harass anyone.
A YouTube video, which showcases Jamal and his ‘protest’ has been making its round on social media since this morning, also showed Jamal shaking the gate vigorously when the security personnel continuously denied him entry.
“Don’t tell me, you (security guard) must ask Datuk Seri Azmin Ali for me to bathe,” he said.
The Sungai Besar UMNO chief, who appeared nonchalant throughout the 'episode', also said that his action had nothing to do with politics.
His action, said Jamal, was merely to ensure that the water disruption will be addressed by the Selangor government immediately.
He related his experience making rounds at a surau in Ampang this morning which revealed that there was shortage of water supply there too. He reiterated that the State government must be held responsible for the shortcomings faced by residents in Selangor.
He claimed that the Selangor state government under the leadership of PKR vice-president, Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali was only concerned about the political affairs and not the welfare of the residents in the state.
“He is only busy giving ceramah until 3am and doesn’t seem bothered about the needs of the rakyat and today, the Chinese community is celebrating Winter Solstice,” said Jamal.
Several parts of Selangor and Kuala Lumpur were affected by a scheduled water disruption since Monday following maintenance work carried out by Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) to install a protective arc system at the main entrance of the Bukit Badong substation in Hulu Selangor on Dec 19.
The National Water Services Commission (SPAN) said the maintenance work by TNB is scheduled once every three years to prevent system malfunctions or electrical disruptions at the plants.
The water supply, said SPAN in a statement issued on Thursday, said the water supply is expected to be restored in stages after the system maintenance work on the electricity supply has been completed and the water treatment plants are operational once again.
