If the late Tan Sri Adenan Satem was known as a leader not rigidly tied to protocol, his widow, Datuk Amar Jamilah Anu takes an equally popular stance.
Having often accompanied Adenan, affectionately known as Tok Nan, in his site visits to the Tanjong Datu state constituency, she easily mingled with the locals.
Recounting the moments with the couple, 'Pemanca Semantan' author, Bujang Zally Man said his most memorable experience was when they enjoyed a meal at a stall in Sematan Market.
Bujang, 74, was a close friend of Adenan, having often accompanied the then-chief minister during their hunting trips for deer, and fishing.
"Jamilah supported all of Tok Nan's activities which reflected her simplicity. I also believe that from her experience following Adenan's visits to his constituency, she is aware of the needs of the residents in Tanjong Datu," he said.
For army veteran Bass Kadam, 47, Adenan's loss as a leader who brought development to the Lundu and Sematan areas has left a void to the residents.
He was of the opinion Jamilah was the right choice to defend the Tanjong Datu seat as she was well-experienced and could continue Adenan's legacy in the aforementioned areas.
Meanwhile, the headman of the Stunggang Malay zone in Lundu, Ibrahim Suni, 68, said Adenan's replacement needed to be far-sighted, open-minded and capable of working together with the residents to fulfil the aspirations of Sarawak's late fifth chief minister.
"I hope Tok Nan's replacement will bring progress to the area, as previously planned. Thus, in my opinion, Jamilah is capable of achieving this feat," he said. -- Bernama
