KUALA LUMPUR: Barisan Nasional has won 44 out of the 56 seats contested in the Johor state selection, according to UMNO Youth chief Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki on his Twitter account.

The results would put the UMNO-led coalition on course to form the state government with a two-thirds majority.

Unofficial results show incumbent Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Hasni Mohammad retains the Benut seat.

MCA had also declared it won Yong Peng - the second seat MCA wrested from DAP after Pekan Nanas.

A resounding win in Johor will give UMNO leaders the confidence to call for a general election as early as second half of the year.

Prior to the Johor state election, UMNO president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had mounted pressure on Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob to call for national polls soonest.
