MUAR: Simpang Jeram incumbent Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub says the electorate can assess for themselves whether he deserves to be given the chance for a fresh term.
Speaking to reporters after submitting his nomination papers at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Agama Haji Mohd Yassin here today, Salahuddin said he has no qualms about Simpang Jeram voters' ability to make the right choice.
"As the incumbent the last four years, I have given my best to the people in need and also have resolved issues in Simpang Jeram," he said.
Come polling day on March 12, Salahuddin will be in a four-cornered contest against Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate Datuk Lokman Md Don, Pejuang's Mahaizal Mahmor and Perikatan Nasional's Zarul@Mohamad Zahrul Salleh.
In the 14th general election (GE14), Salahuddin, the former Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister during the Pakatan Harapan administration, won the seat with a 7,687-vote majority, also in a four-cornered fight.
Meanwhile, newcomer Datuk Lokman Md Don, 59, expressed confidence in wresting the seat and said he will be focusing on young voters following the implementation of Undi 18.
"There are many young voters here... and I will be focusing on their needs as well as help produce a generation that can work on and realise their aspirations," the Johor UMNO deputy information chief said.
A total of 40,014 constituents are eligible to vote in Simpang Jeram.
