Barisan Nasional's (BN) candidate for the Kajang state assembly seat, Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun accepted her defeat with an open heart.
Mei Fun said though she had lost the by-election, BN had however managed to reduce the majority obtained by PKR during the last 13th General Election (GE13).
Mei Fun lost the Kajang by-election with a majority of 5,679 to PKR’s candidate, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, 1,145 votes less compared to the number of votes garnered during GE13.
“Even though BN did not win in this Kajang by-election, but we managed to reduce the majority and at the same time we managed to garner a higher percentage of vote from the Chinese voters compared to the last General Election last year, which is from 18% to 25%,” she said in a press release released shortly after the announcement of the official results.
She also expressed her hopes for Wan Azizah to fulfil her manifesto as promised especially in solving the problems faced by the residents in Kajang.
Mei Fun in her statement stressed that, she will provide her full attention towards MCA's transformational program.
During the Kajang by-election held on Sunday, Mei Fun obtained 10,407 votes while Wan Azizah obtained 16,086 votes.
The Kajang by-election was held after Kajang assemblyman, Lee Chin Cheh of PKR resigned on January 27.
