KUALA LUMPUR: Fans of Kampung Baru bubur lambuk or savoury porridge will be able to enjoy the delicious dish when the annual tradition of serving the treat dating back more than 100 years old resumes in conjunction with Ramadan this year.
There was a break in the programme of distributing bubur lambuk by Kampung Baru Jamek Mosque last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Mosque chairman Datuk Mohd Khay Ibrahim said the National Security Council (MKN) has approved the programme of preparing, cooking and distributing bubur lambuk for the public,
"This time, we will be distribute based on the information of a circular of the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Department (JAWI) which is still not allowing the breaking of fast at the mosque," he told Bernama.
He said this year, the mosque would be spending more than RM200,000 collected from the people to provide the delicious treat.
"We will cook a minimum of 15 pots daily during Ramadan which would be carried out in community spirit involving about 30 mosque congregants.
"Usually, from one pot of porridge, we can provide up to 190 packets of bubur lambuk and we will be using 15 kilograms (kg) of rice, six kg of beef, six kg of santan ( coconut milk), one kg of dried prawns as well as a mixture of spices," he said.
On the tasty porridge of Kampung Baru, Mohd Khay said there is no secret recipe in its preparation.
"We have been using the recipe which was passed down over generations and we do not use any secret ingredient and neither do we add or reduce the spices. Maybe it is blessing of giving alms by the people which made it so delicious," he said.
At the same time, Mohd Khay is also confident the community will comply with the standard operating procedure (SOP) during the distribution of bubur lambuk.
"We do not see the SOP as a burden as it has been practised by the community in the past one year.
"Apart from queuing in the mosque compound, maybe we will use a drive-through approach according to the situation," he said.
