Germany’s triumphant 7-1 win over Brazil in the wee hours of Wednesday was not only a proud moment for Germans worldwide.
The victory was also poignant for a group of 100 villagers in Johor too, who resides in Kampung Parit Jerman in Pontian, Johor.
The village gained popularity due to its name after Germany’s win during the semi-final match on June 16. After the semi-final match, the village became even more popular.
A resident Mohd Khir Tambi, was elated to learn that his village is now famous, thanks to the World Cup fever.
“As a Germany supporter, I'm very proud. My friends and I are confident that we can feast on delicious soup to celebrate its impending win,” said a confident Mohd Khir, adding that he is confident Germany will be able to life the World Cup trophy this year.
“I was confident Germany would win (against Brazil). I predicted 1-0 but didn’t expect it to be 7-1. I am proud to be a resident of Parit Jerman and hope that Germany will become champions. InsyaAllah,” said another resident, Ahmad Daud.
So, how did Kampung Parit Jerman got its name?
Village head Mohd Asri Ali said the place got the name even before the Japanese occupation in Malaya.
The village, he explained, was used as pineapple and rubber trading route by the Germans before World War II and its influence is still evident today at the village's jetty and rail near Sungai Peradin.
