'Kampung stay' new tourism product to attract tourists - Nazri

The Ministry of Tourism and Culture has introduced the 'kampung stay' programme' as a new tourism product to attract tourists to the country.

Its minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Aziz said vacant houses in villages can be used as accommodation for tourists visiting the country.

"This proposal can also generate income for youth, preventing them from leaving for the city in search of jobs as they can work as guides here," he told reporters after officiating at the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Sri Guru Singh Sabha, here today.

Mohamed Nazri, who is also Padang Rengas member of parliament said the ministry would also help the government in reducing poverty in rural areas as well as care for the environment.

He said the Sikh places of worship in the country can serve as a tourist attraction, especially for devotees from around the world.

"Sikhs from India, Canada, United Kingdom and the United States can visit the Gurdwara here," he said.. According to Nazri, there are 135 Gurdwara nationwide, while the Sikh population is about 150,000.
