GEORGE TOWN: PKR President Datuk Seri Dr. Wan Azizah Wan Ismail paid tribute to the late Karpal Singh today.
“We have to continue his fight now,” she told reporters after paying her final respects to the veteran DAP member and lawyer at his home today.
Wan Azizah, who seemed a little lost for words, said that her family is grateful to Karpal as he had provided legal counsel to her husband, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, since he was sacked as Deputy Prime Minister in 1998.
She also stated that he had provided his services for free.
Wan Azizah was taken aback when she found out that Karpal had brought her husband’s case files with him to prepare for the appeal against his sodomy conviction.
“That is why I feel sad that he (Karpal) is now no longer with us,” she said.
Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Ahmad Yakob said that Karpal was a person very dedicated in his duties as a lawyer and as a statesman.
He expressed that the sudden death of Karpal is a personal loss for him.
Wan Azizah and Ahmad were among the visitors who had arrived to pay their last respects at the late Karpal’s home at Jalan Utama in Penang, before the state funeral on Sunday.
The funeral procession will make its way to four significant locations, the Penang High Court, Karpal’s office in Green Hall, the Penang State Assembly building and St. Xavier's Institution (SXI), before heading to Sri Pinang Hall for the state funeral, and subsequently the crematorium in Batu Gantung.
Karpal was killed in a car crash at the North-South Highway near Gua Tempurung early Thursday morning. The accident also claimed the life of his helper, Michael Cornelius.
