GEORGE TOWN: The Youth and Sports Ministry (KBS) is waiting for a full report from the Sports Commissioner regarding the dispute involving the Malaysian Sepaktakraw Association (PSM), which is expected to be tabled on Thursday.
Minister Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican said based on preliminary information received, the Sports Commissioner has met both sides, the state sepaktakraw associations that have pulled out and those still holding positions in PSM, to discuss the dispute.
"I am waiting for the results of the discussions, so let the process play itself out first. Besides, PSM has 14 days, until June 4, to submit its appeal regarding the case.
"As minister, I not only have to ensure the well-being of sports associations but also the development of the sport itself. So if there are any sports associations that are detrimental to a sport's development, of course action will be taken.
"And in sports disputes, we need to refer to the legal process, rules and constitution (of the sports association)," he told reporters here today.
Reezal Merican said PSM is also currently a valid association as no report or complaint that could cause it to be deregistered has been made.
The Asian Sepaktakraw Federation (ASTAF) had earlier suspended PSM from being involved in any sepaktakraw-related activities, on charges of violating their agreement to adhere to all International Sepaktakraw Federation (ISTAF) and ASTAF objectives and constitutions as agreed upon on March 14, 2008.
Following that, 11 state sepaktakraw associations decided to withdraw as PSM affiliates, with the latest being Sabah.
