Kedah police have taken measures to tighten security in the tourist island of Langkawi as well as places popular with the public here.
Kedah police chief Datuk Zamri Yahya said besides this, police chiefs of districts bordering Thailand like Padang Terap and Kubang Pasu had also been instructed to step up vigilance against possible infiltration by Daesh elements.
"If we look at the trend like what happened in Jakarta on Thursday, Daesh terrorists like to target places popular with tourists and outlets like Starbucks. We will step up monitoring and patrols at such places," he said.
He was speaking to reporters after attending an investiture ceremony in conjunction with the 88th birthday of Sultan Abdul Halim Mu'Adzam Shah of Kedah at Istana Anak Bukit here, on Sunday.
At the investiture, Kedah Regency Council chairman Tan Sri Tunku Sallehuddin ibni Almarhum Sultan Badlishah conferred Zamri the Darjah Datuk Paduka Mahkota Kedah award, which also carries the title "Datuk".
A string of Daesh militant attacks at a major thoroughfare in the Indonesian capital on Thursday left eight people dead, including four Daesh terrorists, and several others injured.
In KANGAR, Perlis police chief SAC Shafie Ismail echoed the same.
In a statement, he said Perlis police had stepped up security measures at the entry points of Padang Besar and Wang Kelian along the Malaysia-Thailand border.
He added that security along the border there was fully under control and that the public need not worry.
