Cases involving rings stuck on penis in Kedah have increased by 200 percent compared to last year.

Kedah’s Director of Fire and Rescue Department Malaysia (JBPM) Abdul Razak Muda said 10 cases were reported as of yesterday, compared to only three last year.

He said most of the victims were in their 20s and 30s.

The increase has raised concerns over why the victims resorted to such acts namely due to peer influence other than wanting to try it out themselves.

The victim would only sought help from JBPM when they could not remove the rings themselves, said Abdul Razak.

He also said that JBPM had to use a special equipment to cut the metal rings either on penises or fingers.

Abdul Razak added that there could be more of such cases but the victims most probably refused to report or sought any assistance.

“They rarely reported it to the police, but they will go to the clinic or hospital (to seek help).

"In case of bleeding, clinics and hospitals may be able to help. However, if the rings had to be cut, JBPM would be called in for help,” Abdul Razak said.

According to him, the time taken to remove a ring depends on its material and size. A copper ring may take longer time to be removed as the material is hard to cut through.

On average, the time taken to remove a ring is about 15 to 20 minutes, Abdul Razak said.

Based on past records, five cases were reported at the Fire and Rescue Department (BBP) in Sungai Petani, making it the highest number so far.

Meanwhile, BBP Alor Setar, Jalan Raja and Guar Chempedak each recorded one case.

Last year, three cases were reported at BBP Kulim Hi Tech, Alor Setar and Yan.
