IPOH: A man's good deed of giving money to a five-year-old was misinterpreted as an attempted kidnapping of the child.
Ipoh Police chief ACP Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad said the incident, which took place in Chemor on Wednesday, led to the 35-year-old man's statement being taken for further investigation.
"Based on the outcome of the investigation, it was found that the victim's mother had misunderstood the suspect's actions when he approached the victim to give money.
"The suspect is a local man working as a contractor and a background check on the suspect found that there is no criminal record," he said in a statement today.
He said, therefore, police denied the incident of attempted kidnapping as reported.
Abang Zainal Abidin advised the public not to act beyond the law or speculate about the incident to avoid confusion and annoyance.
"The police will not hesitate to take action against any individual who spreads false or untrue news that may threaten public order under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998," he said.
On Oct 23 at 8.17 pm, the Ipoh District Police Headquarters received a report from a 44-year-old local man who claimed that there was an attempt to kidnap his son by an unknown man at around 2 pm the same day.
