Gua Musang Umno division chief Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah is still undecided what post to contest in the party elections next month.

The veteran politician affectionately known as Ku Li said the intention to contest is there but he has not decided on the post.

"Please wait until nomination day. I was told the date has been changed to Sept 21. I may not be in the country that day," he told reporters when met at his residence here today.

Ku Li said the contest for senior posts should be based on whether one was qualified, needed and could shoulder the responsibility.

To the proposal that the Umno president's and deputy president's posts be uncontested, he said according to the Umno constitution, every member could offer themselves to contest any post.

"Every member can make proposals including no contest for all Supreme Council posts. This is something good and will bring about peace.

"I have an open mind and abide by the party constitution. I'm sure he (Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak) must be confident. After all he has been the president for many years."

Asked whether the party needs more young leaders than veteran leaders, Ku Li said Umno needs a strong and effective combination of young and veteran leaders to chart a better future.
