A construction labourer pleaded not guilty at the Ampang Magistrate's Court, here, on charges of driving recklessly and causing the death of four people in an accident on the Middle Ring Road 2 (MRR2), four months ago.

Masrufi Sain, 66, was charged with reckless driving which caused the death of Hasbullah Abdul Ghani, 25, Hasbullah's wife, Nurul Intan Syahida Nordin, 21, Hasbullah's cousin Tengku Ahmad Faiz Tengku Mohmad, 27, and Asma Ismail, 22, on the MRR2, at 5.40pm on May 19.

He was charged under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 (Amendment 1999) which carries a jail sentence of up to 10 years or maximum fine of RM20,000, as well as possible suspension of driving licence, upon conviction.

Earlier, Deputy Public Prosecutor S.Purnima offered bail of RM15,000 with one surety as the offence was serious and caused the death of four individuals.

Masrufi, who looked calm and was unrepresented, asked for bail to be lowered as he did not have the money and did not have a stable income.

Magistrate Noor Farah Hazwani Osman allowed the accused bail of RM12,000 with one surety and ordered for his licence to be suspended until the case was completed.

The court also fixed Oct 28 for case remention and the accused to appoint a lawyer.
