A Langkawi Wanita UMNO member filed a suit against the party’s President Datuk Seri Najib Razak at the Kuala Lumpur High Court this morning.
Anina Saaduddin, when met by reporters, said she was not afraid of whatever action the party would take on her following the suit.
“I have done this for the party. I feel it is my responsibility in the interest of UMNO members and also the people of Malaysia,” she said.
In her suit, Anina wants Najib to explain the political donations amounting to RM2.6 billion he had received in his personal account.
Najib however had previously explained the funds were not for personal gain.
Anina made a statement at the KL High Court.
UMNO Youth chief, Khairy Jamaluddin had also said, donations from supporters were usually transferred into the party’s bank account or accounts of highly trusted individuals in the party for political activities.
“There is no law in Malaysia that prohibits political parties from receiving donations from its supporters and it is not an offence,” he said.
Anina also named UMNO Executive Secretary, Datuk Abdul Rauf Yusof in her suit as the second defendant.
She is seeking an injunction that will prevent UMNO from taking action against her, pending the disposal of the suit.
On Aug 9, Anina had voiced her disappointment towards Najib during the Langkawi UMNO General Meeting and claimed she had received the support from all UMNO members.
On Aug 3, the Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission (MACC) had confirmed the funds that Najib had received were political donations from a Middle Eastern donor.
The MACC added, the donations had also been confirmed to have nothing to do with 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).
