Parti Keadilan Rakyat’s Lee Chin Cheh said his decision to resign as the N25 Kajang state assemblyman was for common interest and believed that the decision would enable the PKR to serve the people of Selangor better.
In a three paragraph statement published on the PKR’s Facebook page, Lee who is also known as CC Lee thanked the voters of Kajang for giving him the opportunity to serve them.
“I am moved with the generosity of Kajang voters who had given me their cooperation and trust,” he said in the statement.
Lee won the seat in the 2013 general election when he secured 19,571 votes to defeat Barisan Nasional’s Lee Ban Seng with a 6,824 majority in a six-way fight.
A by-election must now be called within 60 days of the EC being notified of the vacancy.
State assembly speaker Hannah Yeoh announced his resignation to pressmen in a conference earlier and had also tweeted about the dramatic turn of events.
There were talks that Lee had resigned to pave way for Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim who is said to be eyeing the Selangor Menteri Besar position, currently held by Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim.
Abdul Khalid and PKR deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali, considered as Anwar’s 'blue-eyed boy', were involved in a bitter row that recently reignited speculation that it was linked to the position.
But, Anwar on Monday, denied the rumours, adding that the talks were 'mere speculation'.
