Legal action can be taken against any individual, group or organisation who make defamatory remarks related to 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).
In a written reply in parliament, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MOHA) said laws such as the Sedition Act 1948, the Printing Presses and Publication Act 1948 and the Penal Code could be used against them.
"Cooperation with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will be enhanced to check the spread of defamatory materials and negative thinking via the social media."
The statement was made in reply to a question from Datuk Jumat Idris (BN-Sepanggar) who urged the MOHA to say what action can be taken against those who slander in the 1MDB issue after a probe found no wrongdoing on the part of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
The MOHA urged all members of parliament and the public to refrain from engaging in defamatory activities.
