Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai has asked the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to 'enter' the Computerised Vehicle Inspection Centre (Puspakom) nationwide to investigate the allegation of corrupt practices in the agency.

He said the allegation was serious and an investigation must be carried out to avoid people from making accusations against agencies under the ministry such as Puspakom and the Road Transport Department (RTD) whenever accidents occurred which killed many people.

"I agree that the MACC must investigate to ensure there is no corruption among members and officers of Puspakom...but I believe Puspakomm itself has done a lot to reduce the incidence of corruption at the centre," he said.

He disclosed this when commenting on the incidence of malpractices by Puspakom staff particularly when carrying out inspection on commercial vehicles and taxis.

Liow was approached by reporters after making a visit to the Bentong Hospital and inspecting the bridge and Sungai Kertau flood alleviation project at Felda Lurah Bilut, here today.

As for the ministry itself, he said, two special units had been formed to check corruption in a more aggressive and comprehensive manner involving agencies and departments under the ministry namely the Integrity Unit and the Internal Audit Unit.

"Through these units, we can identify issues earlier and take action faster. In terms of integrity issues, for example, if there are doubts involving supplies, the people can directly report the matter to me or the Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, Senator Datuk Paul Low Seng Kuan," he said.

In another development, Liow said the Sungai Kertau bridge and flood alleviation project in Felda Lurah Bilut implemented by the state Drainage and Irrigation Department succeeded in overcoming the flash floods that occurred in the area every time it rained heavily and during the monsoon season. - BERNAMA
